Standardized emergency care training for the Sports Medicine Therapist

CAT (C) / SPC

The First Responder course is universally recognized as the entry level provider certification within the EMS (Emergency Medical Service) system.

This intensive course certifies the Sports medicine specialist with a standardized level of basic emergency care as a “First Responder”.

The therapist integrates within the scope of their local EMS system, allowing better access, communication and collaboration during the preparation and execution of emergency medical interventions in the sports milieu.

Core content:

1) Emergency Medical Services  

    (EMS / 911) System
2) Role as First Responder/Therapist

    Home team responsibilities/legalities
3) Reporting, communication  protocols
4) Equipment, tools, supplies, guidelines
5) Primary survey, Airway access,

    CPR / AED -HCP, Heimlich, obstructed airway
6) Face Mask / Helmet removal / Cervical re-alignment
7) Airway adjuncts: oral /nasal airways

    Ventilation; pocket mask, bag-valve-mask(1- 2 person)

     ILCOR: 1 person BVM, Sellick manoeuvre
8) Oxygenation; cylinder, regulator, masks, nasal cannula
9) Secondary survey, protocols, guidelines, vital signs
10) Hemorrhage; capillary, venous, arterial, tourniquet

11) Wounds; hemostasis, care, dressing, bandaging, protect. 
12) Soft tissue management, msk, amputation, neck, genital
13) Fracture management, alignment, Sager traction
14) Spinal injury, assessment, immobilization
15) Head trauma: Mild TBI (concussion) mild and severe

      Prague 2004, RTP, SCAT, contusion, laceration
16) Head trauma: Severe TBI, hematoma, intra-cranial

      bleeding, epidural, subdural
17) Facial trauma: soft tissue, eye,dental,ear, neck

18) Thoracic: chest / ribs / viscera 
19) Abdominal: viscera , acute abdomen, evisceration

20) Respiratory: asthma, COPD,  hyperventilation
21) Medical: cardiac, CVA, seizures, diabetes, poison, anaphy.
22) Shock: physiological / electrical

23) Poisoning, Epi-Pen, Twinject,  antihistamines.
24) Burns:  superficial / deep:  scalds, electrical

25) Drowning / near-drowning

26) Environmental: Hyper/ Hypo thermia /  frost bite / frost nip
27) Childbirth, psychological emergencies

28) Moves, lifts, practical simulations
29) Exam / Scenarios

Certification

-Canadian Red Cross
