A conditioned athlete,
enhances his/her performance, decreases the risk of injury, decreases the
severity of injury should an injury occur, and may be able to return to
activity sooner after an injury than a non-conditioned athlete.
The idiom "get in shape to
play sports, not play sports to get in shape" has good sound medical
research behind it.
Athletes must be
conditioned to be able to stand the physical demands of their sports.
The fitness components of
conditioning consist of: cardiovascular endurance, body composition,
flexibility, strength and power, muscular endurance, speed and agility. Each
of these components must be addressed to completely condition and athlete.
Conditioning is a series of biological adaptations.
